In this case, a special mark is punched on the two end links of the piece of purchased chain. This special indelible mark impresses the Rina (RI) symbol on the steel. This code represents the chain grade and a number identifying the production lot which is also indicated on the chain test certificate (signed by the manufacturer and by the Rina) and permits fully tracing the product over the years.
